Season 3 Episode 4: A Face to Face with Sonia Kashuk
Sonia Kashuk began her career as a makeup artist in the early 1980s. Upon moving to New York in 1982, she was introduced to the legendary photographer, Arthur Elgort. This was the beginning of a decades long personal and professional relationship. It was through Arthur’s endless work for all the fashion and beauty magazines that Sonia was able to make her mark. She became a recognized name in the world of beauty and fashion. In pursuing her love of art and commerce, she begain consulting in 1989 for the Aveda Corporation on both their makeup line and overall creative direction.
In the mid 1990s Sonia co-authored Cindy Crawford’s Basic Face. A hugely successful makeup book focused on the application techniques. 1999, brought the launch of Sonia Kashuk Beauty in partnership with the Target Corporation. The brand was the first professional makeup brand to launch in mass distribution. The brand ethos, of bringing luxury to mass was responsible for coining the term, masstige. Every season Sonia interpreted trends, developed formulas, created new colors, shapes and patterns for both packaging, brushes and bags. She transformed the everyday, making luxury fun, glamour accessible and beauty a reality. Over the course of her career Sonia has been recognized with numerous awards and accolades, many calling her out as a true pioneer.
